Everyone living with HIV in the Philadelphia area can see an HIV Specialist, regardless of their ability to pay for it.

This page lists clinics in Philadelphia with HIV Specialists.

HIV Specialists are medical providers who are qualified to care for people living with HIV. They can be Medical Doctors, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses or Nurse Practitioners, Doctors of Osteopathy, or have other advanced medical degrees.

To be an HIV Specialist, a medical provider has to:
  • See a lot of people living with HIV (over 50 in the last two years)
  • Keep up to date with treatment advances
For more information on HIV Specialty Care, please check out the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Most of the clinics on this list provide primary care, that is, the HIV Specialist is someone's primary provider. Someone might have a primary provider who is not an HIV Specialist, but instead a generalist or family doctor. The generalist might provide a referral for an HIV Specialist occasionally, but continue to be the primary provider. One of these methods is not better or worse than the other. What is important is that each person receives medical care that works for them and that meets the standard of care.

If you want to know more about the HIV standard of care, please check out the Federal Treatment Guidelines, a project of the National Institutes of Health. These Guidelines are revised regularly by a panel of medical providers and community representatives. They are particularly useful to medical providers who are not HIV Specialists but who are providing care to people living with HIV/AIDS. They do not address every aspect of HIV care, but they are useful if someone isn't sure where to start.

If you are looking for HIV Specialty Care outside of Philadelphia, use the term "HIV Specialist" plus city or zip code in the "Search Our Guides" function on the left.
