AIDS Library

Mental Health & Counseling

Programs that provide preventative, diagnostic and treatment services in a variety of community and hospital-based settings to help people achieve, maintain and enhance a state of emotional well-being, personal empowerment and the skills to cope with everyday demands without excessive stress. Treatment may include emotional support, introspection, and problem-solving assisstance utilizing a variety of modalities and approaches, and medication, as needed, for individuals who range from the severely chronically mentally ill through those who are experiencing difficult life transitions or who are having problems in coping with daily living.

  • Domestic violence (spousal abuse counseling): programs that provide individual, conjoint, family or group treatment for individuals who are being physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused by their mates, and/or for perpetrators. Included are programs that provide therapeutic interventions for married couples, people who have live-in mates and/or gay and lesbian couples who are experiencing problems with abuse.

  • Hotlines (telephone crisis intervention): programs that establish immediate telephone communication between people who are emotionally distressed and individuals who have been trained to provide telephone assistance with the objective of diffusing the immediate crisis, ensuring the person's safety, and assisting the person to take the next immediate steps toward resolving the problem.

  • Support Groups:autonomous group of individuals who share a common problem or concern who meet together on a voluntary basis for mutual support. Members of mutual support groups share their experiences, strengths and hopes and rely on one another for assistance. Included are professionally-facilitated groups, structured, twelve-steps models with or without professional participation and groups that have no professional participation and/or no specifically-structured format.
