AIDS Library

Health Care

    Programs whose primary purpose is to help people in the community achieve and maintain physical well-being through the study, prevention, screening, evaluation and treatment of people who have illnesses, injuries or disabilities; and the provision of family planning, maternity, and other services that relate to human reproduction.

  • AIDS Treatment: programs that provide comprehensive medical services on an inpatient or outpatient basis for people who have symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV infections or full-blown AIDS.

  • Alternative Health Care: programs that offer health care and treatment procedures that fall outside the mainstream of conventional medical practice.

  • Dental Care: programs that specialize in the care of teeth and associated structures in the oral cavity including the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the teeth and gums.

  • Drug Abuse Education/Prevention: programs that provide a variety of services including individual, group and/or family counseling; knowledge and skill-enhancing activities; and structured groups which focus on family dynamics, problem-solving, self-esteem and similar issues, for people of all ages who are at risk for drug abuse, i.e., who are currently in the light or experimental stage of using drugs; who are members of a drug using sibling, peer or family group; and/or who have behavioral and/or emotional problems at home, in school, in the community or with the criminal justice system.

  • Hepatitis: an inflammation of the liver of viral or toxic origin which usually is manifest by jaundice and, in some instances, liver enlargement. Fever and other systemic disorders are usually present. Included are infectious, serum and toxic hepatitis.

  • Hospice Care: programs that provide a full range of palliative and supportive services for terminally ill people who are in the final stages of their illness and for their families. Services may include medical care, pain and symptom management, home nurse visitation, case management, counseling, and bereavement services for the patient and members of the family. A hospice may be a freestanding facility, a unit in a hospital or other institution or a program of a hospital, agency or institution.

  • Hospitals (Philadelphia): medical institutions that provide diagnostic and treatment services for people who whose illnesses or injuries that require that they occupy a bed for at least one night. Hospitals can be distinguished by the level of care that they offer (general acute, subacute, extended acute care), the auspices under which they operate which also, in some cases, defines the patients they serve (city/county, state, Veteran's Administration, military hospitals), and the medical conditions they specialize in treating (specialty hospitals).

  • Pediatrics: programs that are staffed by specialists who are concerned with the physical, emotional and social health of infants, children and adolescents from birth to young adulthood. Pediatricians have advanced training in the biological , social and environmental factors that have an influence on the developing child and have expertise in diagnosing and treating the acute and chronic diseases that are common to individuals in this age range.

  • Pharmacies: organizations that are involved in the business of preparing, preserving, compounding and dispensing drugs in accordance with prescriptions prepared by licensed physicians.

  • Tuberculosis: an infectious disease that is caused by the tubercle bacillus and characterized by inflammatory lesions, necrosis, abscesses, formation of scar tissue and calcification. The disease most commonly affects the respiratory system but may also involve the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, bones, joints, nervous system, lymph nodes and skin.
